مدیریت صحیح اکوسیستم‌های طبیعی بدون آگاهی از وضعیت سلامت اجزاء آن امکانپذیر نیست. پوشش گیاهی به عنوان اصلی‌ترین جزء اکوسیستم نقش مهمی در سلامت آن ایفا می‌کند. یکی از ویژگی‌های تعیین کننده سلامت پوشش گیاهی قابلیت بازگشت‌پذیری آن در مواجهه با آشفتگی‌های محیطی است. این پژوهش در شمال شرق استان خراسان جنوبی با هدف کمّی‌سازی قابلیت بازگشت‌پذیری پوشش گیاهی به نمایندگی از سلامت اکوسیستم در پاسخ به تغییرات بلند مدت بارش انجام شد. ابتدا استاندارد‌سازی بارش سالانه در طول بازه زمانی سی ساله با روش SPI انجام شد. سپس‌ تغییرات میانگین شاخص TNDVI حاصل از تصاویر ماهواره‌ای لندست بررسی و بازگشت‌پذیری با محاسبه چهار عامل موثر (دامنه تغییرات، انعطاف‌پذیری، استهلاک و ترمیم) آزمون گردید. طبق نتایج، دامنه این تغییرات در دوره بررسی، 04/6 درصد بوده و پوشش گیاهی مقادیر متفاوتی از استهلاک را در سال‌های مختلف داشته است. مشخص‌ترین نمونه بازگشت‌پذیری پوشش گیاهی، بین سال‌های 1986 تا 1996 اتفاق افتاده که میزان انعطاف‌پذیری 7/0 و استهلاک صفر بوده است. پوشش گیاهی در این دوره پس از رفع آثار خشکسالی (1986)، نه تنها به میزان پوشش گیاهی سال مرجع با ترسالی شدید (1986) بازگشته بلکه به میزان 25/0 درصد نیز افزایش داشته است. این افزایش تحت عنوان شاخص ترمیم (Hysteresis) برای اولین بار در مبحث سلامت اکوسیستم به صورت کمّی در مطالعه حاضر ارائه گردیده است. مجموعه محاسبات کمّی نشان می‌‌دهد علیرغم حاکمّیت کاهش میزان بارش سالانه و رخدادهای خشکسالی، پوشش گیاهی توانسته است قابلیت بازگشت‌پذیری خود را حفظ نماید که بیانگر وجود سلامت پوشش گیاهی در اکوسیستم مورد بررسی است.
